(K)frame

Kevlar and Filament-Fiberglass Hybrid Airframe combining woven Kevlar wrapped by filament-fiberglass, yet retaining industry standard wall thickness.

INSIDE WALL IS COMPLETLY SMOOTH.

Strength and performance that rivals conventional fiberglass with better resiliency than Carbon Fiber products at a fraction of the cost.

38mm airframes and couplers will still continue to be filament-fiberglass, not (K)frame.

What is MagnaFrame?

Magna-Frame is interlaced with layers of gray vulcanized fiber and phenolic.

A proprietary hardened coating inside and out seals out moisture.

A high temperature cured to create a high-strength composite structure.

Every Element has a Purpose...

Each part of this new composite airframe carries its weight:

Vulcanized fiber is very strong and is used in military applications.

CAUTION: There are different grades of vulcanized fiber -- be sure you buy gray.

Phenolic is resistant to moisture and avoids the warpage of pure vulcanized paper tubes.

CAUTION: We tested pure vulcanized fiber tubes (no phenolic stabilizer) -- they warped -- badly. A phenolic stabilizer is critical.

After all that work on your rocket, why take a chance on inferior tubing? Know what you're buying!

The proprietary coating further resists moisture to keep the airframe straight.

Baking hardens and cures the different elements into one composite structure.

Advantages of Magna-Frame shown next to phenolic for comparison:

  • Magna-Frame is S-T-R-O-N-G

  • Magna-Frame is light - - similar to phenolic

  • Magna-Frame is an inexpensive money-saving alternative to filament-wound fiberglass

  • Magna-Frame is safe

  • Magna-Frame absorbs CA adhesives and epoxies

  • Magna-Frame resists warpage

Like fiberglass airframes, it accepts CA adhesives and epoxies (be sure to scuff the hardened outer coating).

TECH TIP:  High Performance Airframe Without The Weight
Want to make the super-tough Magna-Frame even tougher? Laminate it with a layer of fiberglass cloth. Here's how: Dampen a rag or paper towel with lacquer thinner. Wipe it lengthwise over a 1" wide strip of the tube, just enough to wet the clear protective coat on the tube (caution: don't remove the protective coat entirely). This creates a convenient "sticky" strip to which you can adhere the front edge of your glass cloth.

After attaching the leading edge of the cloth, then wrap the rest of the cloth around the tube, go past your start point, then brush on our laminating resin onto all cloth areas and allow to cure. Finish with light sanding and a heavy filler primer.

Or.....get our Dyna-Wind airframe, which is an airframe that is compression-laminated in fiberglass around a Magna-Frame core.

THE LESSON: If you want an airframe with strength and performance, no need for ultra-heavy filament-wound airframes. Don't fly heavy, fly smart. Use Magna-Frame and go split the sky.

Why Is Nonbrittle Phenolic better?
Nonbrittle phenolic Is strong, Like the old standard phenolic But non-brittle phenolic Is much less prone To crack Or shatter. Unlike paper tubes, it won't easily crimp Or buckle. Unlike plastics, will readily absorb CA 's and epoxies.

What is Microseam?

Microseam Phenolic, or "Microseam" for short, is a new type of airframe in which the spiral grooves are nearly eliminated. Tubes with Microseam have an entirely new outer layer that eliminates the tedium of filling grooves with putty.

How do I finish Microseam tubes? That's the great news. Because the grooves are nearly eliminated, two or three heavy coats of "Spot Putty Primer" are usually all that is required. This is an extra thick primer available from Wal-mart and most auto supply stores. Sand in-between coats and then paint as desired.

Microseam......no more grooves to fill!!!!

Double Wall Coupler Tubes

Need a beefier coupler? Try our DOUBLE-WALL COUPLER. It comes in two separate couplers, one of them split lengthwise for insertion into the other. Glue them with epoxy straight together --- or with fiberglass in between for extra strength. The inner coupler is about 1" overall shorter, giving you a 1/2" of shoulder on each side.

Finally there's an easy way to glass your tube - - with the Easyglas Sock

Easyglas Sock

Finally, an easy way to fiberglass your bodytube! The Easyglas Sock is a stretchy sleeve that fits over your airframe to make fiberglassing a breeze. Traditional fiberglassing methods are tricky, and involve wrapping cloth around a tube. The downside of this old approach is that it's time consuming, really messy, frustrating and, worst of all, leaves an overlap ridge that has to be sanded down. In short, it's a royal pain!

Finally there's an easy way to glass your tube - - with the Easyglas Sock.

The Easyglas Sock is not fiberglass, but is made of a material that readily absorbs resin and adds structural strength. We've tried it and it works beautifully. Best of all, it finishes easily. The Easyglas Sock is about as thick as 3 or 4 oz fiberglass cloth.

Here's the simple procedure:

  • Slide Easyglas Sock over dry airframe and tie the loose ends with twist-ties.

  • Mix your resin, and apply thoroughly over the Easyglas Sock. Squeegy excess material and rotate tube occasionally while resin cures.

  • Once cured, lightly cut down high spots with sandpaper, then prime with several coats of extra thick filler primer (available at department stores). Be sure to sand between coats of primer.

That's it!! Trim the ends and you're ready to paint!
Finally...lamination for the rest of us!!

For additional strength Kevlar® Sock (below) can be used underneath the Easyglas Sock.

Airframe Sock of Kevlar®

Dave Rose puts the Kevlar® Sock onto a 6" and 7.5" diameter airframe. He used a nosecone to taper on the sock. He then wet it out with fiberglass.

Airframe Sock of Kevlar®

A new stretchable Kevlar® sleeve made of 100% pure Aramid Kevlar® that slides onto your airframe.

Laminating your tube is rewarding. But while fiberglass is easy to work with, Kevlar® cloth is costly and tricky. NOT ANY MORE!

Now reinforcing your tube in Kevlar® is like putting on your socks. Just slide the Airframe Sock of Kevlar® on the tube. Because it’s stretchable - - like your socks - - it conforms to the tube and compresses down to hold in place (vacuum bagging optional but not necessary). And since there’s no seam overlap, there’s no bump to sand. Because Kevlar® can’t be finish sanded, you’ll still need to cover the Airframe Sock of Kevlar® in a thin layer of glass. The Airframe Sock of Kevlar® stretches to fit tubes from 3” to 6” diameter. It adds between 1/64” and 1/32” to wall thickness.

Size

Price per foot

Airframe Sock of Kevlar®
(order 1.5 times the length of the tube for up to 4” in diameter, and 2.0 times the length for 6”. E.g., for a 3” diameter tube four feet long, allow six feet of sock. For a 6” tube that is 4 feet long, allow eight feet of sock).

Large Removable Rivet

Removable Rivets are two-piece nylon rivets which can be removed by retracting the pin, and then the body. The body incorporates a slot in line with the pin so that the pin can be removed by inserting a small screw driver, other sharp edge, or even a fingernail underneath the head of the pin. In addition to working in a .250 round hole, will also fit the .210"/.218" square hole found in the "darling" type shelf commonly found in retail stores. Very handy for securing nosecones to bodytubes or other applications. Eliminates screws and wood backing.
